<\/p>\nIn July, Inclusive Housing Australia (IHA) had the privilege of attending the World Down Syndrome Congress (WDSC) 2024 in Brisbane. The congress brought together people with Down syndrome, their families, and professionals from around the globe, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. <\/p>\n
Throughout the congress, people with Down syndrome confidently presented various aspects of their lives. They shared stories about their jobs, homes, creative arts, and friendships, highlighting the diverse and fulfilling lives they lead. This was a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusion and the capabilities of people with intellectual disability when given the right opportunities and support. One example was someone who was employed with Achieve at Crowle! She now works in her dream job with Girl Guides.<\/p>\n

A particularly engaging session was the panel on housing options, co-presented by Sam Hegarty. Sam is in his 30s and has Down syndrome. He lives in his apartment, has regular employment and enjoys being a hip-hop dancer. The panel of experts covered crucial topics such as deciding where to live, privately renting, sharing equity ownership or with Project Independence, and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) options. IHA’s partner, Lighthouse Infrastructure, also participated in this panel, emphasizing their long-term commitment to providing high-quality, purpose-built SDA.<\/p>\n
IHA is excited to see people with Down syndrome speaking out with confidence and living lives enriched by work, secure housing, and meaningful relationships.
